Rempel Family Farm
Rempel Family Farm has been in the family since 1960 and raises over 70 different certified organic fresh market vegetables, — near Palmer, Alaska! In your boxes, we’ve been sharing their amazing-tasting carrots and several kinds of potatoes, Magic Molly purple, Yukon golds and German butterballs.
In 1990, Mark Rempel and his wife, Tammy, took over the farm on which he was raised and by 1992 were farming organically. Mark said he was reading the Material Safety Data Sheets on the chemicals typically used on the farm and wondered if it was really a good idea to be putting that on food crops. Thirty years later, he believes the vegetables taste better, contain more nutrients and he’s increased the organic matter in the sandy loam soil from 2% to nearly 5%.
When it comes to pest challenges, the Rempels have critter visitors we don’t often think about in the lower 48, such as porcupines and moose! Mark says the moose love cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower, and will daintily pick the growing cauliflower heads right out of the middle of the plant. He’s figured out that 3 strands of high tensile electric fence, like that used to keep livestock in their pastures, will generally defend his fields from these hungry grazers.
Many thanks to Mark, Tammy and their youngest son, who works with them and intends to carry on the family farm, for their hard work and delicious organic vegetables.
