True Heroes
To all of the essential folks working today amidst these difficult COVID-19 times, we know you are exhausted and we know you are true heroes! This includes, among many, our teams packing boxes on both day and night shifts, our customer service staff working so hard to manage missed items, boxes or quantities, our administrative colleagues in marketing, accounting, procurement, and menu planning and all our fearless partner farmers and their employees. All of us are making a difference, from those of us out there trying to make the world a safe, healthy place to eat and live in, to all of you, our members, that may be heading to essential jobs every day or sheltering in place; your sacrifices are making a difference and together as a community, with our consistent social distancing practices, we are flattening the curve and slowing the rate of infections.
This week on the farm we had our first full stretch of transplanting and it felt amazing to put plants in the ground and smile at the beauty of their young green hue, knowing they will have great days ahead. The ground is absolutely perfect: warm, moist, rich and alive with nutrients, ready to begin a full season of growing. We finished up our third succession of seeding as well, with the help of my kids, to give them a little breather from online learning.
We also planted many flowers in the hopes of making a special garden this year dedicated to those lost in the fight against this disease.
Our kids are very inquisitive about the spread of the flu in other species, especially elk. We will run into them on Carnation Farms and their misty morning, steamy breadth almost appears as a cough; but they are quite healthy and robust and, of course, hungry. We do love to see their immense stature and laugh at our antics of trying to keep them out of our fields all season. Stay safe and be well.
