Supermen & Wonder Women
Farm News
This is the time of the year when everyone on the farm switches from Clark Kent to Superman and Diana Prince to Wonder Woman. We all begin to go into superhero status when it comes to the amount of work possible. Harvesting dominates our long and hot days and watering dominates our long afternoons/evenings – and in Andrew’s case, well into 2:00 a.m. in the morning. We have been watching incredible red sunsets at night with all of the fire and haze in the area, all the while maintaining well-watered and tended veggies. Andrew has been vigilantly watering the potatoes well past midnight and hoping to saturate deep. It is the long hard push to finish fall plantings.
We’re trying not to beat ourselves up too badly about the crops we chose for this summer. With this heat we’ve experienced it leaves us saying, “if only we had planted…” The true life of the farmer will always have those regrets, but we need to focus on the here and now. So, our here and now is to keep harvesting and keep watering because before we know it, the cool fall days will arrive, and we won’t have the excess heat any longer.
The Canadian Geese have arrived and are attracted to our lush green veggies, and like the elk, they went straight for the Romaine Lettuce. What is it about Romaine that is the first pick? A few nights ago we lost over 250 cases to the geese and have been trying to shoo them away from our fields with cannon sounds. We will really need to put on our capes and let them all know these greens are for members only! The last we checked the elk, geese and beavers have not signed up or paid rent! We also had a surprise visit from a bear to our berry patch trying to glean the last of the blueberries. We see this as a healthy sign that wildlife is diverse, and perhaps a sign too that the salmon run will come heavy this fall.
White flowers on our potatoes showing great hope for fall crop!
While many of you are finding respite in the cool air-conditioned theaters, know that your farmer superheroes have put on their Herculean suits, and will remain faithful to the growth and bloom health of our fields and crops for your weekly delivery!
