Seed, Water, Transplants, Oh My!
Farm News
Actually, it looks more like seed, water, fish fertilizer, transplant, water again and cultivate weeds – oh my!! These are the best days − busy, busy bees we all are. Ziggy endlessly prepping fields and having to fix the plow. Andrew keeps breaking even on his birthday. Fidencio and crew deep in the radish and spinach harvest with breaks for transplanting. Uriel in his irrigation acrobat mode managed all irrigation up and running today for the first time this season, and I continue to keep the greenhouses full and humming along happy and healthy waiting for their new home in the rich, organic soil.
We are all working around the clock, and as is for most Pacific Northwest farmers, we are loving it! We barely make it to our beds, tired and dirt covered somewhere close to 10 p.m., only to rise up a few hours as sunrise is now coming in close to 5:30 a.m. Today, all hands were on deck to get all of the cucumbers and summer squash planted as the cool, cloudy day was an absolute perfect window of opportunity. We decided to plant the squash and cucumbers in field 2 much closer to the barn this year − first time we have ever had them this close and can’t wait! Blueberries have fully set and boy, there are tons. We uncovered a few beds that had been taken over by the blackberries, and the abundance on these rare, unpicked bushes is laden with spectacular, fat luscious clumps.
The bee boxes have been given a new home over by the blueberries and blackberries, and the bees seem quite pleased with all of the flowers. A possible bear track was seen and coyotes pop out in the early morning hours.
We had a delightful member day last weekend, the weather was warm and sunny, and it was great to meet all the folks that came out. We continue to grow organic veggies knowing how much you enjoy the delicious, local produce.
