Reaching Yet Another Heat Record
Farm News
Seattle and the Pacific Northwest shattered the record for high temperatures on March 12th as the earliest day of any year for 70-plus degree temperatures since the weather service began keeping records in the 1940’s.
On our farm, we took full advantage of this three-day stretch of warm, dry weather culminating on Monday at 73 degrees Fahrenheit. Tractors were in the field tilling up the ground and breaking down remnants of winter veggies that had reached their peak as Ziggy was disking all day. Andrew came to finish out the long warm afternoon and evening.
The soil was warm and fragrant with millions of microbes, and the birds were on full eating detail. The black, luscious wet soil with remnants of winter turned beautifully, and you could feel it breathing as we infused oxygen and prepared it for our annual fertilization routine. This year, we will focus a great deal on fertilizer putting more nutrients and supplements in early. We get very motivated at this time of year as we can feel the veil lifting, our eyes itching a bit with all the cherry and plum trees springing in blossom, and many old friends returning for a new season.
There is no greater sense of hope than these warm days in March when we share clear perspective, energy and renewal. It is a marvelous time to be a farmer. We feel exceptionally lucky to be residents of our land and confident stewards of healthy, organic produce. On March 15, 1947, Seattle set the record of 72 degrees F, and now March 12, 2018, we took it up a notch and are making the most of it!
We hope you are enjoying the beautiful blossoms. We are surrounded by budding trees, pink and white blossoms and the sense that we have made it through winter and are now heading straight into spring.
