Purple Radishes & Baby Spinach
Farm News
This week happily marked our first official harvest of the new season crops with a big hooray to radishes and spinach. Both are tender and delicious, and the cooler, wet days have been a huge help.
We have gorged ourselves silly on the purple and red radishes − perfect little round balls of intense flavor. The spinach is so buttery and fresh it hardly needs any dressing, and we enjoy it warm with a bit of olive oil and sea salt.
As we head into mid-May, we will start to feel the change of season in a significant way. The days will feel quite long and the sun much more intense as they are predicting 80-degree days next week. We are starting most days before 7 am and ending after 7pm − full 12-hour days will not be uncommon moving forward.
We love it! Bring it on! We are so happy to have the earth warm and the days long and that wonderful time when you can literally watch the plants grow.
We have already seeded up out first flush of cucumbers in the green house and will plant winter squash this year early as well. Andy seeded up over ½ a million carrots this week in the late evening hours and managed to even fight back some beetles as we covered up the radishes and spinach. We feel like there may be a few days of nice gentle rain now, and then again in May and June, but we get irrigation all in place.
Our new friends the honeybees are settling in quite nicely, and we are excited to have folks come out for member day on the farm this weekend. We hope you are able to get outside and enjoy the fresh air of May.
