Let’s Be Bold
Farm News
Let’s be bold. That was the thinking this week as we decided to add carrots and beets into our first flush of field crops. Normally, we start with just spinach and radishes, but perhaps it was a sense of earliness or a message in the wind. We just had the urge to try for a flush by early summer.
Carrots and beets usually don’t see any action on our farm until late July, so this would be a fun change of pace for our palates. Andrew has been seeding late into the evenings on the tractor and although the ground is still pretty cold, we think this planting will do just fine.
We have been quite busy filling up the greenhouse with our first flush of kales, lettuces and broccoli, and once again, we find ourselves responsible for hundreds of thousands of seedlings!
The rains have been gentle and nourishing unlike our unpredictable and heavy winter squalls, and it is a bit easier working with the loud sound of birds chorusing throughout the valley. Spring is here, and our days are filling up and quite busy already. Schools are starting to visit, and Geoff and Kirby with Stewardship Partners continue clearing out blackberries along Griffin Creek for our new plantings coming in next week.
“Let’s be bold” must have also been on the minds of our neighbors’ horses as they decided to hop the fence and frolic in our wet, mucky middle areas, that have not been worked yet. Luckily, they didn’t do any damage or eat any valuable plants, and for a minute, it was quite thrilling to have them running free, all 10 of them. We look forward to more tours in April, lots of greenhouse work and our first Member Day of 2018 coming up at the end of the month.
