Fickle Spring Days
Farm News
The ground is slowly beginning to warm up, and spring is being quite fickle as we work one day in the fields and then take three days off due to cold rain. Luckily, we had a warm, beautiful first member day − many thanks to the new members that came out to tour the farm and get some fresh air over the Easter/Passover holiday.
It’s official − the 2018 planting /growing/farming season has begun! This week, we were again honored to have Nature Vision and 100 third graders out to the farm in a day of restoration, water ecology and planting fun. Many schools will begin spring break, but you would never know it in all of the trees blooming in full gala−they are definitely not taking a break! I am always in awe of the intense burst of color and green leaves that appear with such robust fervor.
As usual and right on time, the ospreys have also returned to many of the nests around the river and we are reminded by their high, intense call that the eagles will have some stiff fishing competition.
The week will finish with lots more seeding as we embark upon our leeks. This year, we will transplant them in the ground over at Carnation Farms where we did potatoes last year as part of our rotation and crop diversity plan. Hopefully, more sunny days will return as our greenhouses fill with the deep wonderful green and red colors of lettuces and brassicas.
