Fall Sunrises
Farm News
The sunrises the last two weeks have been spectacular with deep blue sky above and the orange, pinkish, red wisps of clouds hovering just above the trees. The tranquility early in the morning is an incredible moment and disappears all too quickly. The light is sparkling and dancing between the vibrant fall colors of each dropping leaf. The earthy, sweet smells of the ground and air are all around, and the days have been bright and sunny reaching 68 degrees.
It has been an incredible gift for us on the farm — many kids have enjoyed running in the fields, harvesting radishes and kale. Our crew, harvesting the big loads of winter squash, leeks and carrots, are so thankful for the dry, cool air.
Our hands are a bit chilled in the early morning brisk, but quickly warm to the soil and hot afternoons. We had a lovely Member Day filled with lots of smiles and wonderful questions. Thank you all for coming out and making a difference by being engaged in your local food system.
As we head into the end of October, we are working hard against the diurnal clock pulling in most of our crops during the day and then processing them as light falls away. We are doing a little remodeling in our packing shed, replacing the tarp overhead and walls for winter crop storage. It seems to be the hub this time of year as the greenhouses and barn are all sleepy. The packing shed has become our vital artery, our coffee shop. We have the squash washer in full production fun to see the beautiful shades of each variety. As one second grader from St. Catherine’s said to me this week, “F.U.N. This is fun!” We couldn’t agree more. We hope you have a chance to enjoy all the changing colors both out of doors in nature and in your boxes as the incredible variety of veggies is inspiring for our kitchens and nutritious for our mind and bodies.
