Celebrating 25 Seasons
And we’re off… Our first full flush of veggies has filled the greenhouse, and it feels sooo good!!
One-hundred trays of broccoli and 325 of lettuces—green, red, romaine, escarole, endive and frisee. Seventy each of cabbages, and red, green and lacinato kale, and last, but not least, 600 trays of parsley. Parsley is only being planted this once, so it’s a much bigger number, totaling 120,000 starts in all. It is a wonderful feeling, and a priceless event, to put the first trays in the greenhouse for the season.
This marks our 25th season growing veggies, and to all the older farmers who said, “You are not a true farmer until you reach 25 years,” we are here to tell you we made it!!! It’s been hard, and is no doubt getting harder, but our long hours, physical toil, and immense perseverance have brought us to this proud moment. We are so thankful to be part of this community with you, our members, supporting your health and our environmental future!
There is a lot to celebrate this week, and a super moon on top of it all. Celebrating all the amazing women on our farm, today and the years past, we have been graced by lovely growers from all over the globe, and we would not be here today without them. Women have worked on so many aspects of our farm, from tractors to greenhouse, harvest and processing. Women have accomplished so much more than cleaning bathrooms and doing laundry, we have changed the face of a male-dominated world, equalizing it on many fronts.
A special shout-out to Emily, who has been with us for over half of our time, through many hard days and many fantastic days. She is, by title, Assistant Farm Manager; more specifically, she is extraordinary in her role of managing our crew every day, in the fields, at the packing station, working on sales and availability, and implementing our GAP certification. She is one of the strongest women I know over fifty, and she comes in every day and works tirelessly to improve standards, grow food, and try and make this world a better place. AND SHE DOES! Thank you Emily, a million times over!!
