Beckmann’s Bakery

Beckmann’s Old World Bakery was founded by Peter Beckmann in November 1985. Son of a craftsman family, he apprenticed in bread making at Mantei Bakery in Heidelberg, Germany. After moving to the United States, Peter had a longing for the traditional breads of his home country. He baked the first commercial loaves in his kitchen oven and hand delivered these samples on his bicycle to four local Santa Cruz grocery stores. This was the start of a business that to this day honors the German commitment to traditional artisan baking using fresh, all-natural ingredients, with no GMOs or preservatives.

In addition, for over 30 years Beckmann’s has been crafting award-winning pies. They use traditional European methods, simple ingredients and let the flavors speak for themselves, creating pies with “the best buttery flaky crusts you will ever have!” Says one Beckmann’s pie enthusiast, “1001 Stars – Such a pie! I thought I knew what a perfect apple pie was — until I tasted a Beckmann’s pie. Their pie is AWESOME!

Recently, four Beckmann’s pies won Best in Show at the Pie Council’s National Pie Championships:  Rum-Laced Pecan, Classic Pumpkin, The Berry Bomb and Cherry competed and won in the Super Gourmet category. A total of 362 pies were entered in the contest from 24 different makers. The Beckmann’s team transported ingredients in ice chests cross country to Florida, where bakers were given access to a commercial kitchen. Competitors came from all over the country, and judging happened behind closed doors. Pies were judged on a variety of factors, including appearance before and after slicing, mouth feel, texture, taste and originality.

We are thrilled to offer these pies in time for our members to include them in their holiday celebrations. Beckmann’s apple pie is mildly seasoned to give just the right flavor balance,– not too sweet, not too tart. Their pumpkin pie is perfectly spiced and makes a lovely centerpiece for your holiday table.
