A Few Of Our Favorite Things
I wish I could move the grandest of the grand pianos into our 116-year-old barn and just tickle the ivories with holiday songs all day long, playing loud for the veggies, the fields, the soil, the salmon, griffin creek and all of us in our rain gear. The traditional versions like:
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things
And then there would be our versions:
When Griffin Creek flows
Silent birds of prey show
Perching outside their nests
Surveying our fields as we humans walk thru
And snow geese are our guests
At this time of year with the seasonal changes wildly erratic, we are generally poised for quiet wet days, daydreaming of music, fires and cooking our veggies that are often overlooked. Trading in the ever-popular Brussels sprouts and apple strudel for aromatic leeks, thyme, wild mushrooms and celeriac soups, all delicious gifts we enjoy many times over in this winter solstice month. We invite you to spend time in your kitchen experimenting and discovering new flavor combinations, humming your favorite tunes with your own special lyrics. For my son on his birthday coming deep in winter, he is happy to stick to, “When the dog bites and the bee stings.”
